KLVE Takes Home a Marconi
Winners of the 2009 National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Awards were announced September 24th at the annual Awards Dinner & Show held during the NAB Radio Show in Philadelphia.
Among this year’s winners was Los Angeles radio Station KLVE-FM, chosen as Spanish Station of the Year. Laura Ingraham hosted the Awards Dinner & Show, which featured a live performance by R&B artist Brian McKnight.
Established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, the awards are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio. Marconi finalists were selected by a task force of broadcasters, and the winners were voted on by the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy.

American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT SoCal) has announced the six women to be honored at the 2010 Genii Awards April 14, 2010 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Actress Betty White, best known for The Golden Girls, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Acting. Mary Hart, Entertainment Tonight Host, is the recipient of the Excellence in Television On Air Award. Clear Channel personality Lisa Foxx, (104.3MYfm/LA, Star 101.3/SF, and Star 94.1/SD, will receive the Excellence in Radio On Air Award. The honoree for Excellence in Radio Management goes to Rosemary Hernandez, General Sales Manager at KNX1070 Newsradio and KFWB News Talk 980. Karla Keller, Senior Account Executive for Anheuser Busch, will be the recipient of the Excellence in Advertising Award; and AWRT SoCal Past President and SCBA’s Director of Community Affairs, LaFern Cusack, will receive the Tracey Miller Merit Award.

Hall of Famers Inductees
2009 inductees into the National Radio Hall of Fame have been announced and include Barry Hansen, better known as Dr. Demento (left). He was part of KPPC, KMET, KLSX and KSCA over the decades and hosted a syndicated show of weird, off-beat and homemade music.
Others selected are Neal Boortz (right), heard through syndication at KGIL during the past couple of years, Wendy Williams, longtime New York personality and most recently at KDAY in syndication, and radio executive Norman Pattiz. Pattiz is Founder and Chairman of Westwood One, America’s largest radio network organization, and a pioneer in the national radio syndication business.
Premiere Radio Networks will produce and distribute the live induction broadcast in November with KFI’s George Noory acting as host.
Humanitarian Award for Hughes
Cathy Hughes, founder/chairperson of Radio One (once owner of KKBT) (left with Congressman John Conyers) recently received the Kappa Alpha Psi Humanitarian Award. Along with Cathy, others receiving the award from the Grand Kappa Fraternity Brothers were President Barack Obama, Senator Mary Landrieu, and Dr. Ian Smith
In accepting her Humanitarian Award from Kappa Alpha Psi, Cathy Hughes thanked the Fraternity for their ongoing support of the Piney Woods School. The 100-year old school in Piney Woods, Mississippi was the recipient of a $1 million dollar contribution from Kappa Alpha Psi during their fundraiser on August 6, 2009.
